Hi.

I bought an e60 530d a year ago and had problems with the engine not heating up to optimum temp. It will slowly heat up to 25% and then no further in this cold weather. If I drive it for ten min and stop for five and drive again it will heat up more, or if I floor it, it will heat up a bit further but it really struggles in the cold. I replaced the main thermostat late last year with a spurious one. The one I removed seemed to be fine. The coolant I removed seemed to be poor with some corrosion in it and it was a water antifreeze mixed solution unlike the pre-mixed red solution I replaced it with. I tried to do the purge operation I found using the auxilary pump but it didn't seem to operate. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...coolant+system. I am tempted to change the thermostat to a OEM item as the car is quite hard on fuel as it seems to be trying to heat up the engine all of the time. It did heat up correctly during the summer after driving for quite a while more than it should. Does anyone have any ideas please. I am reluctant to change the thermostat again as it tokk so long but I will do it if its needed.
Thanks.

Where did you get 25% from? are you looking at the redline limit or are you actually getting a readout from the secret OBD menu?

I just noticed this weekend that my 530d isn't getting up to correct temp. It normally sits at between 89 and 91 degrees on a motorway journey but this weekend it was at between 82 and 84. I have ordered both main and EGR thermostats to replace tomorrow if the weathers permitting (£70 for both from BMW). Worth making sure the car runs at the correct temp otherwise it will be really heavy on fuel and wont do the DPF any favours if your car has one.

Would you mind doing a write up/taking pics please?
Me e60 sits at around 70 degrees on the motorway... I think I need to change the thermostats as well

I have replaced the EGR valve as shown. I am getting the 25% as midway between 4 and 4.5 on the tem gauge at the edge of the rev counter as shown.

Don't rely on that use the hidden menu to see what temps you car is actually running at.

Instructions are here. Once you have unlocked the menu push the trip reset until you have selected 7 that's the water temp. Its really easy once have done it a couple of times.

Remember to add just the last 5 digits of your chassis number, not 6, when calculating your unlock code!
