Hey guys, will I finally figured out why my car was shacking on the freeway and making horrible grinding noises when turning. I started to suspect strut mounts/bearing after the same thing happened to my E38. The nice thing about the strut mounts on the E60 is that the bearings can be inspected just by opening the hood and removing the plastic cap at the top of the strut mount. I had several other issues to deal with at the same time, its unnecessary to take things this far apart. I thought I would share just so you could see how worn the bearing were after 150K miles.

DAMN YOU Harbor Freight!! Can't even make a decent spring compressor!!

I had replaced the front hubs and rear wheel bearings along with the inner and outer tie rods a year ago. Good thought.

I think I need the same thing done on my car, plus tie rods. Where did you purchase the parts from the dealer ?

I bought the parts from ko performance. Mostly because here in CA orders from them arrive next day. Total parts cost was ~$220.

I had the same issue...after much checking look at the top of the shock piston where it sits into the bottom of the strut mount/bearing, I saw that it wasn't drawn all the way up. Remove the cap at the top of the strut, use a 21mm socket and tighten until that gap closes up...its a conical piece that had to be pulled tightly into the mount...phew, car drives like a dream now after a week of that annoying thud...good luck
