I just received my safety recall notice in the mail from BMW of North America - I live in CT. This was sent to me without me doing anything to assure that BMW would know the car is now in my possession so I am assuming it goes by VIN# through DMV somehow.
It states "The repair will consist of replacing the brake vacuum line on your vehicle. If oil has entered the brake booster, the brake booster and brake master cylinder will be replaced. The actual repair will require approximately four hours; however, additional time may be required depending on the BMW center's scheduling and processing. This work will be performed free of charge."

Mine came in the mail today as well. I've owned the car for 19 months and it has never been to the dealer and I have not informed BMW NA of my ownership. I assume they got my information from the DMV too.

I bought the car in July, and not from a BMW dealer so DMV is a safe bet.

I was in the dealer last week for my X3, and asked about the recall for my 550. They were able to pull up my vehicle and confirm I was included, and could schedule to come in whenever it was convenient. Curiously though, they indicated that in Canada it was just an inspection item rather than confirmed replacement of any parts... seems that if there is a recall, shouldn't it be the same in all markets??
