I'm looking for a set of Conti ExtremeContact DWS tires but I can't seem to locate the front pair. TireRack has been out of them and a few other places I've tried I've had no luck. Rears seem to be in abundance though.

Fronts - 245/40/ZR18 93Y
Rears - 275/35/ZR18 95Y

When I called and spoke with a TireRack rep he said the front size is on national back order and expected in 4-6 weeks. Is there some kind of shortage or something?

The 19's are in stock and ready! Too many people have 17" or 18" wheels thats why. They are also the best tire for the price and the economy sucks. Therefore, everyone is buying them.

I came real close to buying them yesterday in the 225/50-17 size and tire rack had them. This size is not that popular though. I decided on the Pilot Sport A/S plus though. I was afraid that the combo of soft and tall sidewalls would feel too squirmy. The only trade off seems to be minor in deep snow and ice. Considering how fast they plow here, I didn't think it would matter. They also had a $70 rebate on Michelins that ended yesterday. That kept the total price to only $38 more than the DWS for all 4.

Good choice. The Pilot Sport A/S is a better performance tire than the DWS.

As timing would have it, a day after I posted this and after 30+ days of checking their site, Tirerack shows they will have stock on the fronts next week, with delivery to my door ~8/23-8/24. My order has been placed

Not sure about that Scott... The DWS is the #1 rated all-season ultra-high performance tire on Tire Rack and the DWS scored rather better than the Pilot Sport A/S in a four way test conducted by Tire Rack...
