Winter tires and Wheels

Hello,

Looking for some advice. I have an E61 535xi wagon that came to me c summer tires only.

My preference would be to buy 4 rims and snow tires. I am Questioning the rim size that delivers the best ride? I have seen some sets of 17" rims w 225R50 winters - would these be a good choice ?

Thanks for your help,

Bill

225/50R17 works on my E60 535i with the large M Sport brake rotors.

See tire/wheel fitment guide by putting your vehicle information at:
Winter Tire Search.

Yes, they would be. 225/50R-17 is what Tire rack recommends for snows for your make and model. For snow, you want the narrowest footprint and going to a 17 enables you to go to 225.

You're also smart getting a dedicated set of rims for winter. Just be aware of your offset. Regular "i" car rims won't fit an xi.

+1 on that.

I just picked up a set of snow tires from a 3 series owner 215 in size.. so pretty narrow.. slightly smaller by 3% but will be fine for me. I've used the wheeltirecalculator or willtheyfit.com to check out the size differences. Finding 17's that would work should be pretty easy, just have to get new TPMS.. or ignore the warnings.. not sure how much the E60 will go crazy.

Heck, if you were closer you could drive down to Boston.. I have an extra set of winter rims that I'd sell pretty cheap.. like $100 or lots of canadian beer.. haha.

I have a line on a set of 215R5017 Dunlop snows on rims for 1100.00. There are a lot of sets for much less but all have the wrong offset.

Is 215 Ok or is 225 what I need.?

Thanks,
Bill
