Hi. I have a 06 530xi with style 350m wheels 18x8 square set. I have 245/40/18 tires on all four. My question is, can I run a staggered tire set up on square set up? Meaning I would like to run wider tires on the rears? Is that possible? The rears aren't wide enough Thanks

Yes, I've been using staggered setup (granted in my case my wheels are staggered too) for over 5 years ... the key is to make sure the front & rear tires has the same (or very close) rolling diameter or the awd will be confuse and start having issue.
The idea is the same so do an extensive search such topic has been covered many times before.

It will since you basically widening the contact patch of the tire but probably not too visible ... The rear size to use seems to be 275/35/18 in order to get the closest rolling diameter between front and rear to avoid problem on xi/AWD/x-drive which are the exact width as my setup.
Next concern is I think 275 width may need wheel at least 9" wide.

Is there another alternative size tire that may b able to take a 8 inch rim and give me a wider look?

You can't do another size due to the xi limitation that front and rear must have the same rolling diameter ... if you get an alternate rear other than 275 you'll need to adjust the front too.
