Rim cleaning help please
 

I have a set of 166 M5 rims. I got them repainted about 2.5 years ago from a well rep guy down in Orange County, CA. I guess it's not as good as I thought it would be. He missed several spots and from the advice of a friend of mine, he put a heavy layer of clear. I'm assuming to cover the half*** job he did, anyway, that's besides the pint. Just a brief background.

The main point is that the rims mainly the front set have a bunch of little dots on the rim. I was under the impression it is road grime so I tried the following to remove them:
WD-40
GooGone
Stoner Tarminator
Alcohol 70%
Soap/water
Megs Mirror bright wheel cleaner
Simple Green (green & purple versions)
Eagle 1 rim cleaner

And all of these did nothing.

After playing with them a bit more I am able to remove these little spots with my finger nail. I can only do so much which a finger nail.

I don't think the pros use fingernails to remove stubborn stains/road grime, brake grime or what ever these are.

Anyone have anymore suggestions or options?

It's really annoying to see these spots on the rim after a nice wash.

Try a liquid rubbing compound like McGuire's. I've always used it to get rid of tar spots on my paint finish and it works well with a little gentle action. Then give the wheels a coat of wax.


However, be aware that the spots may also be pits from brake dust. I found that if you don't remove brake dust in a timely manner, it starts to eat away at the wheel finish. Hopefully, that's not your issue. Good luck!

lacquer thinner won't damage clear coated finishes provided they are urethane based clear coats and the wheels were refinished with quality material.

lacquer thinner is AWESOME for cleaning just about anything off of a car.
