Tire rack is showing an optional tire size for the rear tires of 255/40R17, with the stock sized 225/50s on the front.

has anyone on this forum ever mounted a staggered set of tires in this size on stock E60 17 inch wheels before??

I was running 245/45/17 square on my x-drive. No rubbing issues, so I can't see going 10mm wider in the rear being an issue.

^^^thanks for the response. I'm going to order tires next week, I'll probably give this staggered set a try. there is no cost difference involved. anyone else care to chime in?

Also, stock tires on a 550i sport are:
Front: 245/35ZR19
Rear: 275/30ZR19
That should give you an idea of what can fit in the back (IIRC the chassis is the same, save for the aero kit). As for how wide you want to go on a 17x7.5 wheel, that's up to you. I thought 245 looked pretty good. you can go wide enough where it's not helping, but I'm not sure what that point is.
