Confusion about tire rotation for 2008 e60 535i stock model
Hi folks,
I’ve read all the topics about tire rotation and the opinions about rotating and not rotating tires.
My current treads are 4mm rear and 6mm front (only 10k miles on this new set) and I’m thinking about rotating them to even the wear.
What I understood so far:
- if they are staggered tires then there no rotation since the front and rear tires are different sizes
- if they are non-bidirectional treads then it should be front to back swaps on same side
- if they are bi directional treads then swap in an X pattern
What I’m not clear about is a few things
1. What is the meaning of staggered tires?
2. How do I know if my treads are bi directional?
3. What about the TPMS, how do I calibrate the car to let it know that the tires have changed positions?
4. how do I know if I have active TPMS or passive TPMS? As I understand with passive TPMS, there nothing to calibrate since it’s measuring rotational speed and not reading the sensor in the rim.
I’m using Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires

You can rotate how you want to. You would know if you had staggered because the fronts are smaller than the rears in width. You don't have directional tire. It would tell you on the tire with a symbol or you can look at the tread. Does your iDrive tell you the pressure for each tire
Does your iDrive tell you the pressure for each tire
Thanks for clarifying that.
The iDrive doesn’t give me a pressure number but it shows me a color for each tire. I have noticed on cold mornings some tires are marked red or yellow to indicate low pressure while the others are green.
Hi folks,
What I’m not clear about is a few things
1. What is the meaning of a staggered tires?
This means the tire size and rim size (usually) are wider in the back. It is usually done for aesthetics. It's debatable whether there is any performance gain.
2. How do I know if my treads are bi directional?
Uni-directional tires usually have an arrow on the sidewall indicating direction of rotation. If you don't have that, your tires are bi-directional. (see comment below)
3. What about the TPMS, how do I calibrate the car to know that the tires have changed?
I don't believe that is any calibration needed if you are just swapping tires from one corner to another. If you are changing tires (e.g., winter to summer tires), you need to recalibrate the TPMS in iDrive.
4. how do I know if I have active TPMS or passive TPMS? As I understand with passive TPMS there nothing to calibrate since it’s measuring rotational speed and reading the sensor in the rim.
If iDrive shows "FTM", that is the the passive TPMS. If your iDrive explicitly shows "TPMS" then you have the active TPMS, needing the special valves.
