Sent messages

If this question has already been answered somewhere else I apologize ahead of time. Here goes...
Why dont my sent messages appear in my sent messages folder? Usually what I do is, if I want to message someone I click on their name, scroll down to send message ... type up my message and done. But for whatever reason out of maybe 15 messages I have sent only 4 very old ones are showing up.
