2008 BMW 535 with N54.
I have a no start condition. Errors were crankshaft and camshaft position sensors.
I removed both and tested. The voltage from the harness was correct for both as was the voltage drop when metal placed on sensor.
I do not get a voltage drop on the cam sensor when manually rotating the engine.
What would cause these not to communicate?
Thanks!
What were the codes? Heck a broken chain would cause a no start. Are you saying the sensors tested good?
Don't have codes in front of me. I used INPA.
Yes. The sensors were in my hand and tested good along with the three wires from the harness going to both.
The chain isn't broken, I had VANOS solenoids out and could see the chain moving with no signs of an issues.
There's no abnormal noises. Just the engine turning over.

Please keep in mind that testing sensors statically is not the same as testing them dynamically. They can test OK statically but still be bad dynamically.
I’m having the same issue. Got the above codes after replacing my cylinder head. Cranks but no start. Checked sensors and also get voltage drop. For giggles I replaced with two used sensors and got same errors. Checked wires and get battery voltage and .5 ref voltage signal. Because I’m getting both intake and exhaust error, I think it’s a timing issue. I am having problems fitting the plate on the vanos sprockets. It fits but I really have to fiddle with it. I’ve ordered 2 new sprockets and will try to re-time the motor this week. I will update with results. If you have any luck or other suggestions - let me know!
ps - mine is a 2008 535i N54 too
