We have a 2010 528i with N52k.

I called FCP and they sent me the 180 amp voltage regulator for the Valeo alternator (or what they thought was the correct voltage regulator).

I pulled out the alternator.

I started taking disassembling it and figured out the FCP regulator was the wrong one.

After talking with FCP and competitors, they say they don't have the Valeo voltage regulator, nor can they get it. They told me to buy a new alternator for $400.

There must be a army of BMW owners that have changed the voltage regulator in their Valeo alternator.

Where does everyone buy their Valeo voltage regulators?

I bought an alternator from Rock Auto recently, far cheaper than anywhere else.

Since you had it off, did you confirm what was actually there? Addording to Rock, it could be 150A or 180A Bosch, or 180A Valeo.

Yes, I pulled out the alternator and it was made by Valeo (not by Bosch). It was a 180 amp unit as you'll see in the picture below.

I have attached a picture of all the Valeo part numbers that appear on the back of the alternator cover (which means nothing to Rock auto or FCP).

The concept that we can't buy a $25 voltage regulator and have to buy an entire alternator is insane.

Sad you can't just get the regulator you want. My recent experience with an alternator having 270,000+km failing showed problems with diodes, bearings and worn brushes. I was happy to just put in a new one. Especially since R&R was a massive undertaking on an M54 engine.
