530i won’t start if left in sun too long
Hi guys!
My son’s 530i won’t start if it sits in the direct Florida sun for too long. If he uses a window sun shade that helps.
While it’s not starting, the battery tests good and everything else runs normal. It just won’t even try to turn over; nothing when you turn the key over.
The only thing I can think of...
The dash and windshield were replaced by the previous (and only other) owner to retrofit the bmw HUD (heads up display) system. He lives here in FL too and says it never wouldn’t start like this when he owned it. Don’t know if this is a possible contributing factor to it not starting, but once the dash cools off it will then start.

Do you have or access to a error code reader that will pull BMW specific error codes. Something like Carly for BMW or one of the PC based software programs, such as ISTA, INPA, NCSexpert or one of the other BMW platforms?
Could be in the ignition switch assembly. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=NA73-USA-01-2005-E60-BMW-530i&diagId=61_1725
Getting to the starter is a bear, if you can get a test lead to the starter solenoid terminal, test for 12v when ignition switch is turned to the start position. If 12v is present, problem is not with ignition switch assy, but starter. ://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e60-530i-lim/repair-manuals/12-engine-electrical-system/12-41-starter-motor-with-mounting/EIraX5A
Good luck...

It's not the sun I can guarantee that. When you put the key in the on position do you get dash lights. You probably are having a starter issue. Has the starter been changed before.

Will check into the starter issue.
why only when car has been in sun though?? I mean, you can replicate this like a science experiment. Put in sun without dash protected... won’t start. Use sun shade, car starts.
Just nothing from the starter when you turn the key.
Not sure about starter having been replaced or if it’s original.
P.S.
This car has a MANUAL TRANSMISSION
