i was going to get the Carly app, but now it has a yearly subscription cost.
does anyone know if the old version will still work, or if there is a better solution?

If you previously purchased the Carly pro, prior to mid March 2018, it will remain as a lifetime app with lifetime updates at no cost. Also the in-app features will also continue at no cost. If however you are a new user, post mid March, then it is a annual subscription fee. Still not bad if you always want to have a diagnostics tool with you at all times.
