Default E60 is too small

Thinking of replacing with an E65, or even E66. We shuttle a couple of geriatrics around now and my son is over 6' at 15. Anybody know an active forum for the 7?

I know people always say "steer clear of 7", but they're 95% the same as a loaded 5, so my fear isn't extreme. Wife is less than enthusiastic but I want to stay in a BMW.

You have more E65/66 engine options over there than we do here. I steered clear of an E65 because it's N62 only in the US, and I didn't want to deal with that motor. I'd stick with a six-cylinder car if you can. Good luck.

Over there? I'm not 'over there', I'm 'up here' in the Great White North.

The only options for engines are N62 and whatever the V12 is (don't want one of those).

Aside from the potential valve stem seal issue, I don't know that N62s are really that horrible. Buddy of mine has an '06 X5 with that mill and has used it to pull a 25' trailer for years. Had to replace the water pump this summer as the bearing died, and it does smoke out one tailpipe but not too bad for 250,000km. I did the pump for him and it was pretty easy.

I recall dire warnings about N54 issues that never materialized for me. Either I'm very lucky or the majority of problems get overblown on forums. Who here posts that they don't have problems with their cars?

I'm still on the fence though. While I have the ability to do pretty much any repair on a car, I'm not sure at 53 I want to be tearing cams off a DOHC V8.

I can also vouch for the N62. I have 340 000 kms on mine (2005 545) and no sign of stem seal problems. I have changed the water pump, alternator and the usual valve cover and timing chain cover gaskets along with alternator bracket gasket, but that was at 300K kms - all pretty normal I think,

Agreed, although I am one who does post that I don't have Unusual problems with my car. I don't consider myself particularly lucky neither.

Salut, Bob P.

LOL, my bad. I have no idea why, but for some reason I though you were somewhere in the UK.

No worries.

Now, I'm finding myself searching ads for 750s. And I just checked if an Li would fit in my garage (tight but doable). Ugh.
