John:

I would swap out the 125s for the 172s. The 125s are handsome wheels but they seem better matched to a less radical shape than the E60, such as the E39. For example, I adored the M Parallel wheels that graced my 2003 E39 540i Sport but I think that they would not look as good on my much swoopier E60.

Only thing with 172s is get ready to spend a lot of time and effort cleaning them. But I think that they are worth it.

do it, and get some low dust brake pads...you'll need them

how does he have rft's on the 172's if they are OEM? OEM 172's on LCI 550i's come with non RFT conti's...

then u definitely want to keep your non RFT's (like you said earlier), hope he's local so you can do a wheel and tire swap...

I vote yes, too. I thought about getting 125s because I like the wheel and I can get a set at a good price. Then, like others have said, I think that wheel is a little dated. Better on an older model.

I know but the reason this is even a subject is because I like being more unique, so the 125's suit me. The 172's are very nice, but a PITA to clean and much more common. Still a debate in my mind.
