I would just pay for the paint and try to install it myself with a couple of buddies. anything over a $1000 just seems to much for a body kit install.

Hello guys

today I bought my M kit from the dealer. cost aprox $1300+tax the parts department guy made a discount as if it was for a body shop not an accesorie. he also make sure that the kit was in stock in one of their werehouses...because the person that also is selling kits on e60 keeps saying that the kit is on backorder.. so I should be getting the kit on thursday..
the question is.. part department guy recommend me a bodyshop for painting and installing the kit and told me that the body shop told him they charge $1700for painting and installing.. I think thats too muchhh .. I am just going to try finding a body shop that just paint the kit.. any idea guys what is a reasonable amount of money for painting and installing???
Which dealership and who did you deal with?

Most shops will charge $200-250 per panel for prep, paint, and polish. I'm not sure about labor for install though.

+1 on the self install, I just did mine this weekend solo and really it wasnt hard at all, plus I not only have the self satisfaction of knowing it was done right, but you also learn more about your car in the process. Be self sufficient and save your self a few bucks along the way.

I just paid $250 to get a M5 spoiler painted. The kit is not that hard to self install, make a weekend out of it and save some cash. There are tons of DIY on the subject.
$250 to get the spoiler painted that seems very high

Problem with painting is, they have to do a certain amount of "get-ready" work, no matter how many parts they're doing. They gotta get the paint, mix and thin it, sand and prep the piece, fill the paint into the gun, lock the booth down for however long they gotta use it for, paint the piece, empty the gun and clean it, and then polish the piece. A lot of it doesn't take any more time for multiple pieces as it does for just one. Prepping and cleaning the equipment, mixing/thining the paint etc. I think $1700 sound a little high for painting a few pieces and simply R&R'ing them on the car. What's bodyshop labor rates now? $50/hr? That'd be like 30 hours (plus paint material etc), and there's no way it takes even close to that long. R&R'ing both bumpers can't take more than 4 hours. What am I missing here? They need to glass in some of it?

$1,700 I think is too much... but dealer would charge me $1,300 for painting and installing the kit.. I think is ok... a little expensive but at least I would get warranty on the job .. they hourly rate I think $42.hr probably lot of hours to do just a bumper paint.. but they do have a lot of expenses on the shop.. so they have to add extra hours.. think is finee

I paid $1700 for the kit and $1200 for paint and install. The company that did it used PPG paint, which is what my local BMW dealer uses. They were also really experienced in painting BMWs and Mercedes Benzs. If I were you I wouldn't skimp on a good paint job done by professionals. If you think you can install it without scratching the paint, more power to you!
