Handling is fine to me... I think it is the run flats.. I feel that the car is more stable after i changed to #166 non-runflats.

I have RFTs and haven't experienced any problems. I too have had my bimmer to 250 kph and stability was never an issue. I love the RFs and push them hard. Will be visiting Nurburgring in the spring...

I remember reading an article in Roundel that suggested BMW put really soft shocks in the pre-LCI E60 (and E90) Sport models to offset the stiffness of the RFT's.

Perhaps that could explain it...?

I totally have to second the comment on the 5ers ride!! All in all in handles very well, especially around corners.

But in straight line it feels very soft and not as solid as it should. My dad got his his E61 a month ago and he is almost
scarred to drive faster than 160km/h especially with some wind going. No other car has felt that unsafe on the autobahn
than the new 5er.
A collegue who has just the same car (company car) has the same issues. He went to the dealership and asked
if they can fix that. His Ford Galaxy wasn't that light on the straights.Fix what?? they were asking and talking about
best handling and yadayadayada...

The thing is, limos of other colleagues have different tires and do drive better. But still nothing to be happy about.

What could help out with the problem?

check tire pressure and age of tyres.

Mine was a nuisance (noisy and wobbly over ruts (the ones trucks cause on weak asphalt)) even with various (bit lower, as advised, higher) pressures. But with the new tyres (RFT's again) all that is gone. The old ones weren't worn yet.

I take it up to 230 every other week and with the new tyres it's much more calm than before. I must say though, that the old tyres were fine up to 180 or so. But in turns it would wobble as if they had too little air in them.

MMMh, I don't think we have the same problem here. But did you just change the tires or got a different
make, type etc.?

The thing is the car is unstable at high speeds since day one! Especially on windy days the drive on the
autobahn is just horrible. The car is all over the lane and you always have to correct the line. Maybe
we will have to wait for the summer tires, but still weird.

I ran RFTs for 50k miles and now PS2s for the past 7k miles, albiet on a 6er. I barely notice a difference. PS2s have less tramlining on a single groove, but deep cut rain grooves on concrete surfaces produce FAR worse wiggiling than the RFTs. I roll a little more on the PS2s in sharp (ToD type corners, 90 degree or more) corners compared to the stiffer walled RFTs. But on brisk acceleration from dead stop I get less DSC intervention. I do not know the tire size on E39, but sport pac E60s have some pretty wide tires so that has to be a major player in my mind over the ARS.
