I can't get any of the downloads to work - are they still being hosted? I'd love to see this test, I missed the episode they featured it on!

How come the M3 lap time is the same as the 535d? Surely it must have been pretty wet when they tested the M3.

p.s. link doesnt work...I really wanna watch this

Thanks sooo much - I've been trying to get hold of that review for ages! Also a really great website, lots of video's of car reviews, albeit a lot in German!

I've never seen an e60 in red before (looked like non metallic), it looked like a beast, wish we'd got that colour now - I'm suprised Clarkson wasn't as impressed by the 535d as he show'd - perhaps it was his dislike of diesel that prevented him from showing his true impressions - I'm also suprised at the fact he didn't rate the 5's handling, I can't remember the word he used, but it's certainly not one i would assosciate with the driving characteristics of the e60!

Perhaps he still has something against BMW, even though he considered having an M5!

He said it was 'a bit of a pudding' but that it was alright for a big saloon.

He loves it really - you can tell.

I have some problems with their science of their test though

Jezza is a fairly average driver - reference his struggle to get round the ring in the jag diesel and his rather average lap in the suzuki liana.

The stig is a professional racing driver (apparently).

So the better driver was in the 545i. It was also pretty wet so neither car was going to lay down it's best.

Any way during the laps, the 535d was RIGHT behind the 545i. But somehow at the end there was a 3 second gap. Did Clarkson fall asleep or get lost or something ?

I don't want to start the whole 'which is faster debate'.

Also he kept talking about 'the 535d's petrol equivalent' - it doesn't have one - the 545i has 2 extra cylinders and 1500 additional cc's.

(ok I know the 535d has a couple of turbos - but who wants to drive ANY non turbo diesel - unless you have a farm).

Personally - I think the 535d is something 'unclassifiable' - it's only direct rival in the model range is the 530d (IMO)

Yes, that's it a 'pudding' - correct me if i'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the 5 series was still considered to be one of, if not, THE best handling (or at least best to drive) big saloon in it's class - if this is still the case, and JC think's its a pudding, then I'd hate to think what the rest are like!

Don't get me wrong, I love JC, and most of his opinions, I have all his DVD's/books etc, however I think he'd prob had a bad day when making that episode!

Yes, the better driver, in the faster car, in the soaking wet, both RWD - makes no sense... (did they ever do a lap time for the 545i?)

Any way during the laps, the 535d was RIGHT behind the 545i. But somehow at the end there was a 3 second gap. Did Clarkson fall asleep or get lost or something ?

I also found that strange, though JC did seem to run out of talent (and run wide) on quite alot of corners, which is down to his 'bad' driving

I would say the 530i is closer to the petrol equivelant, being that they are similar capacity/cyl's etc...

What you really have to ask yourself is why there is no lap time for the 545i on their board..
The answer is simple! It was slower than the 535d.

Ahh, a conspiracy theory!!!

But what possible reason would their be for Top Gear to hide this information? Do we truly believe that they would have all those other times available yet "hide" the 545's because it suffered the humiliation of a loss to the 535? These guys are in the TV business and they would have gotten more and better telly out of a story about a diesel beating BMW's (at the time) top V8 model, don't you think?

(Even it were true. Which of course it isn't )

Or perhaps a more plausible explanation is that they just didn't do a timed run for the 545?
