Red face

Everything I have to say about the Times review is here but suffice it to say there are five key mistakes.

I don't agree at all with the first counterpoint in the BMWCCA rebuttal. iDrive on both my 2005 545 and my 2007 550 was appallingly slow. Speed of operation and responsiveness has undoubtedly improved with more recent iterations, but the NYT got that point dead on in relation to earlier releases of the technology. The lag between input and response was, more often than not, unacceptably slow.

As I've posted before - older iterations of iDrive (for those with Professional Navigation) were the epitome of a wonderful vision and forward-thinking concept let down by second rate execution. The NYT got that one right.

I've seen the new iDrive on a friends 2009 M3 and it's quite impressive. For one, the resolution is so much nicer. I like it.

The early versions were slow but I had Gen 2 iDrive in 3 cars (same iDrive as in your 2005 and 2007) and it was not SO slow that you should could only use it when parked. That was the Times' contention. My contention is that, while it was slow, it was not as slow as the writer contended.

Gen 3 iDrive is fine - as fast as any other car's system. Gen 4 is wicked fast.

Maybe if the NY Times ever got their facts straight they wouldn't be in dire financial straits.

The I_Drive in my 2008 E61 works nice and it gives you control over so many different aspects of the car.
I love being able to fine tune the climate system and the heated seats.

You should've seen what they did to my father's obit last year (granted, it was nice that they gave him a full 1/3 of a page but they made mistakes on the spelling of his name in 3 different ways and they issued a lengthy correction/apology this past may in the newspaper)
