Ahhh I see. The ratio described as "power to weight" actually meant "weight to power"...

"weight to power" is rarely used since, in this case, "smaller is better" and therefore counter-intuitive when talking about performance.

I wonder if the ratios based on HP or PS?

I have not verified the posters numbers, just trying to clarify what was said. When he says "...10.96 lbs per horsepower compared to 12.34 for the 535i.", it is clearly weight to power despite his statement of "...550i has a power to weight ratio...". As I said, not very clearly described.

I assume they mean HP based on the quote...

According to BMW's posted numbers:

The pounds/HP of the 535i with an automatic (not the Sport Automatic) is 12.34 (3703#/300HP).
The pounds/HP of the 550i with an automatic (not the Sport Automatic) is 11.02 (3968#/360HP).

Of greater interest to me is the difference in the torque curve. The 550i peaks at 360 lb-ft @3400 rpm, and is not linear. The 535i peaks at 300 lb-ft from 1400-5000 rpm, and is linear throughout that range.

The majority of the 550's already much greater maximum torque is available from relatively low in the rev range (at around 2000 rpm or so). Essentially, the 550 never puts out less than the 535's maximum and puts out 20% more right in the midrange sweetspot.

Secondly, where do you get the weight numbers? The 550 is typically shown as over 100lbs less than your number. BMW in the UK for example show the weight of the 550 SE as 1735 kg which is approx 3817lb.

(edit - I see you probably used the weight numbers from MY08 sales brochure)

Interesting. I'd love to see the torque curve. Is one available online anywhere?

Correct (US vesion).

Sorry for the lack of clarity in my post. The figures are infact the weight to power ratio, but as it is commonly referred to as the power to weight ratio I used that term. Sorry for the confusion, although I would love to drive a car with a 12.34 horse power to pound ratio. I got the figures off of the 2008 brochure. I agree with BMWSTL - the weight distribution of the two cars is too close to be significant which is one of the reasons why I felt the reviewer was over-reaching in his write up.

We obviously inhabit different circles.

Though I know it "exists" I've never seen anyone use "weight to power".

I find it much more intuitive to know how much horsepower I have pulling each pound weight.

YMMV - and indeed it seems to.

Well since you are in the UK and I am in Hawaii, I suppose we do inhabit different circles (except for this one of course). Sorry but I don't know what "YMMV - and indeed it seems to" means. Power to weight ratio is .081 hp to lb for the 535i and .091 hp to lb for the 550i. Seems odd to me to talk about it in those terms, but in any event the ratio is in favor of the 550i.
