so the RL comes in first, but it's the last one I'd want out of the group tested. The 530xi's small wheel/tire combo was criticized. I REALLY want to see pics of the 530xi with 18" wheels.

Make mine a 330xi, please!
(ordered, Euro Delivery in 2006)
The new 3 is plenty big for our family, and I'm not a fan of bigger car (just the opposite), so the new 3 seems like a good fit for us.

I felt the same way too. When I took a drive it was no comparison to the BMW on a good day. But when my BMW is having a bad day it struggles to keep up with other cars.
Al said and done I am not happy with the way my BMW drives. I am trading it in for ??? Looking hard at the RL.

My Ride: 2006 530i Sport
Silver Gray - Black Leather - Anthracite Maple
Manual Transmission
Premium Audio
Cold Weather Package
Rear sunshade
Sirius Radio
Autobahnd Roadblock (3M) film kit
The Edmunds testers should have their driver's licenses revoked. 7.4 seconds 0-60??? The old 2004 530i did it in 6.9. What on earth could possibly have been their problem? I know the xi is a bit heavier, but BMWUSA's site even shows 6.9 0-60 on the 530xi with the steptronic - and their figures are notoriously conservative.

I drove all of the cars before I ordered a 530xi and here is my ranking:
BMW 530xi
Audi A6 3.2 quattro
Infiniti M35X
Lexus GS300 AWD
Acura RL SH-AWD
The RL suffered from lack low end torque and was a dog. Plus it looks like a glorified Honda...which it is!
I plan on running the stock rims through the fall and make them dedicated winter wheels/snows. 18X8 will be in this car future next spring and I have no doubt that it will improve cornering and not at the expense of ride quality.
THe BMW moniker is postioned to be a premium brand and priced accordingly. IMO, like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

My Ride: 2006 530xi w/ Premium, Sport and Cold Weather Pkgs
Jet Black / Auburn Leather
Let me see if I got this straight...
The 530xi was rated #1 by the editors for engine performance, transmission, braking, suspension, tires, steering, front and rear seat comfort, audio system, headlight illumination, overall build quality and fun to drive.
It was ranked dead last (#5) only on secondary control design (iDrive) and cupholders.
Yet, it comes out #4 of the 5 cars evaluated - principally because it had $5K worth of options they didn't value, had an anthracite maple/beige leather interior combination they thought was ugly, BMW put the CD changer in the glovebox rather than in the dash, and the editors still don't like the E60 body style or iDrive.
This should serve as a reminder to read the reviews, not just look at the final rankings. A weighting scale that values cupholder construction and CD placement over basic automotive engineering can give you a pretty skewed view of what's the best car to buy.
As one of the editors said in her Second Thoughts write-up: "All of the cars in this test were elegantly outfitted and, with rare exception, quiet and refined cruisers that kept me content for hours. But the BMW [530xi] is the one that would get me out of my warm bed on a cold winter morning."
