For me it's sad news. Unlike other said, that a good design has to have immediate effect and not take two years to grow on you, i say that we have to remember that since 2001 Bangle had the balls to change something, to give a fresh look to the BMW brand. And since he did it after a few decades of conservatism then it was obviously there will be some shock to it. We all were not expecting that. And soon after 99% of us got to accept it and even adopt it. Sales are sales and figures speak for themselves.
As for me i think Bangle had:
Excellent designs: with E60, E90 (facelift), E92, E71.
Good designs: with E90 (prefacelift), E70, E63/4, F01.
So-so designs: E81, E87.
Rather bad designs: E82, E83.

BMW is now at the crossroads. If they go back to being more reserved and conservative in their new designs, they'll die under the tires of the new M-B and Audi designs coming out....

If a BMW looked like shit, but each and every engine had the genius that was behind the N54, which is arguably one of the best engines made, then I'd still choose a BMW. What appeals the most to me about BMW is the engineering behind it. There's German engineering and then one step up from that is BMW engineering. Some care about the aesthetics , but I say, if the M5 can beat the RS6 the next time around, then nothing else matters. Audi has really made leaps and bounds in both aesthetics and engineering. The cars look really nice and finally appeals to both a casual driver that wants an Ax or the guy that wants to have some more fun in an Sx or RSx

My opinion of CB was that he was someone who was willing to push the envelope and try (risk) something new. Corporate culture is now so based upon focus groups and designing to the median it was nice to see a major corporation with a person of influence who has an opinion and is willing to try something different. Most designs now are too safe. I want an emotional response and am willing to put up with the occasional misstep rather than having cookie cutter safe. More than the person or the designs, I will miss the attitude of Chris Bangle.

I think that BMW has fallen behind MB and Audi in design, if his departure is a result of this I support it. Having said that I have a huge appreciation for what he did. Having spent several years in a few corporations prior to embarking on my entrepreneurial venture I can also understand if he was pushing for something that the Board wouldn't buy into and he just left in frustration ...............
