Chris Bangle is to leave BMW:

Have to say I'm disappointed. I'm a big fan of his work, and as he's shown over the years he's got the biggest balls in the industry.

Interesting...

His designs [as well as Adrian Van Hooydonk's] are [were] clearly ahead of their time and it's obvious that many of the initial detractors in the industry are now imitators!

Wow, that is huge news! This forum is clearly a testament to our appreciation for his innovative ideas. Ideas that should "wear well", well into the future. Great design is great because others copy those designs, claiming them for themselves. I, for one, will miss seeing what he had up his sleeve next for the BMW line-up.

I think Adrian designed the E60 and E90 etc,. he is the one with the pencil,
bangle just oversaw everything.

Right, although it was David Arcangelli who was the guy who effectively designed the E60. Adrian had more of hand in the 7 series. I think the issue is direction and leadership. Bangle did go upstairs as you say, but his legacy is clear and he was the guy who pushed the BMW board to think different. BMW is probably going to become more conservative under Van Hooydonk - and I think that's a shame.

Adrian did the E90 - still have the mag with his interview pre-launch, admits that he had to tone it down.
hats off to Bangle- good man, whatever they say, the current crop are the best styled BMWs for ages
E60,orig E65, Z4, still nothing like them on the road, but copied even by MB (eg. boot/trunk of E65 on the S class)
The facelift E90 is what it should have been in the 1st place(now with E60 type front).

whatever happens, they need to rethink the interior, as they are not enough nowdays v the competition

Wrote about it briefly this morning - see http://bmwcca.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4479

The news release hadn't come out so I had to call BMW NA to confirm what had been reported in a few newspapers.

Remember the most important point here, already mentioned, is that Bangle ran the show, with a number of designers doing the drawings, for him. He was the one who picked up on those he liked best and and sold these very creative groundbreaking concepts. You know, the simplicity of the interior I think is something quite wonderful coupled with i-drive, also groundbreaking. This thinking certainly helped to de-clutter the interior and put the focus back on the performance of the vehicle on the road.
