With the torque of diesel engines, I really wonder why people prefer petrol ones. Unless they have really big ones But I live in Belgium so don't even dream of it.

My Ride: 530i 6 speed
This demonstrates again the problem that in the US, fuel comsumption (i.,e., CO2 emissions) is NOT an issue for the legislators.
I hope the high gas prices will help to correct this eventually, but as long as US manufacturers have no modern Diesel engines to put in their cars, I am afraid this will not change.
The NOx limits are kept simply so low that foreign Diesel engines will not come to the US market.

I would be extremely interested in a BMW Diesel, if the opportunity to purchase one here would arise.

My Ride: My ex-ride: EU '08 LCI 520dA. Space Grey, Sport Seats in Black Leather/Fabric Anthracite, Sport Steering Wheel, A/C with Extended Features, Hi-Fi Speakers, Cup Holders, Cruise with Braking function, Folding Rear Seats, Xenons, Park Distance Control.

The diesel tech is more NRJ/HP efficent and therfore clever, to a point.
As we know a diesel engine is more costly to build with all its turbo's
and fine valves etc.
But this will be a fact with new BMW gas engines as well.
The diesel problem has been and will be the pollution by microparticles. This had lead to a lot of cancer illness among us.
I know, that the new filters will partly solve this problem and hopefully in the near the future these will be obligatory in all diesel engines!
One other thing is that the higher refining of the quality diesel fuel compared to the lo lead 95e (or 89 - 98e) gasoline fuel is much more expensive.
Not to mention the problems with diesel fuel in extreme temperatures.
OK, the high tech computers will help here but...
We have i.e. a guy here in Finland who is experimenting with bio-diesel (using a VW Touran V10 diesel). I hope him the best of luck!
