My Ride: In a place where the Mercedes density is the highest in the world (no. of MB per square kilometer) I choose a Bimmer, why? because of one thing "The Ultimate Driving Experience" My Ride: 523i Steptronic, Silver Grey Exterior, Black Interior with Black Dakota Leather and Maple Wood Trim. Are they for real? The suggestion seems to be that to pass the nox emissions standards in the USA a 535d would need an animal urine injection system

Bizarrely enough I think it actually *is* for real! I've seen a number of articles suggesting that urea is needed to take care of the nox issues, the problem is that the system needs to be topped up from time to time and the concern is that the top ups won't get done. The issue I think is that US regs require similar thresholds for all gasses whereas the EU rules focus on lower CO2 at the expense of higher NOx.

The 535d is based on the old 530d - BMW have replaced the single turbo on the 530d with 2 units. These run sequentially with a small one kicking in first then a second much larger one. Effectively this flattens out the power delivery and removes any turbo lag.

Power is increased from 218 bhp to 272 bhp and torque from 500 to 560nm - but I think the real difference is the smoother delivery.

What the 535d has done is lift the 530d from being just a fast exec cruiser - to being a genuine alternative to a V8 like the 540i / 550i - It's not as fast as the 550i clearly, but in a lot of circumstances it will feel pretty close.

BMW have complicated things a little though by bringing in a new 530d with an aluminium cylinder block. This increased power to 231 bhp but kept torque pretty much the same at 500nm. Importantly this also widened the power band and peak torque is now available at 1750rpm instead of 2000rpm in the old car. This new engine is also more refined and from the outside the car no longer has the 'trademark' diesel downturned exhaust.

The new 530d is closer to the 535d in terms of performance, but the 535d still has the edge.

I think that a new 535d with the latest engine cannot be far away.

I'm going to be pendantic... The downturned exhausts featured only on the earliest 530d's (like mine), from inception to the start of 2004 when the particulate filter was fitted... The straight-thru' exhausts didn't appear with the 231ps 530d...
