Bimmer Magazine Says 535D Is The Best BMW

My Ride: 2011 M3 Convertible, Alpine White/black, 6 speed
2011 535xi Tasmin Green, Venetian Beige
In August Bimmer Magazine, they call the 535D the best all around BMW currently produced. They also said that "the pending reduction of the sulfur content in U.S. diesel fuel from 150 to 15 parts per million later in 2006 will allow BMW's high-tech diesel engines to enjoy a healthy operating life. and new particulate filters to remove soot from diesel exhaust have also been perfected." What all of this means is that, in all probability and with a few changes, BMW will be bringing this and other diesel models to the U.S. in the not so distant future. I don't know about you but the lousy gas mileage and the fact the the roof doesn't fold down 
are my only two complaints with my 550. If the 535D comes here within the next 24 months it will certainly be my next car. Anyone else want to stand on line with me??

I've never listened to BMW's diesel engine sound. I'm curious how it sound in the cable. I cannot stand the diesel sound when I'm in the cabin. This would drive me nut. I sold my Lexus/Harrier 330 because of this is one of the reasons.

Let's keep with your same line of questioning. Perhaps you'd like to tell us how much time you've spent with the petrol V8?
On the other hand I have driven many diesels and in the cabin, the 535D sounds (and performs) NOTHING like the stereotypical diesel so the point I (failed to) make was that until you have compared both a 535D and your favourite V8 you can't reasonably exclude either.
I hope that fulfils your curiosity.

They don't sound anywhere near as good as the V8's. But they don't sound bad either.
In warmer weather mine runs silky smooth and when top gear tested cabin noise they found the 535d was quieter at cruising speed than the 545i
If BMW introduce the diesels in the USA, then I would hope that they will at the same time switch the 535d to the new aluminium engine block in the latest 530d, which will give even more power and refinement.
One way to look at the diesels is this .... I think everyone would like a BMW petrol V8. Inthe UK that's a painful car to own in terms of running costs. The 535d can give you that sort of performance in daily use without quite so much pain.
