535d M Sport v 545i (now 550i) - it was pretty obvious what would win  - it should have been the petrol 530i v the 535d - IMHO that would have been a better competition

Yep, hardly a fair comparison; the 535d was driven by Clarkson and the 545i by The Stig, a veteran racing driver!

Actually the comparison was good. The 535d is above the class of a 530i. The 535d was built to be compete with V8 Diesels and much bigger engines. Sure a standard 535d is not as fast as a 545i but the point is that it comes very close for much much better fuel economy.

Agree. Then imagine a remapped 535d with practically the same hp but much more torque than 545i...

hmmm the 535d would probably have killed the 530i and that would have put Clarkson to shame as he always said he hates diesels <_<

I agree about the 535d targeting more powerful cars but this was like a 550i V an M5 - both very powerful but not fair to compare <_<

It should have been against the 540i with the 4.0 V8. Both these cars cost the same so this is a fair comparison.

Not really, both were driving automatic transmission cars which is always going to level the playing field. This was effectively won by who would get to the first corner the quickest, and getting to that was simple point and shoot. I'm not sure that's anything that would be influenced that much by driver skill. Whether Stig or JC were in the 545, it was always going to out-drag the 535 from a standstill - and so it proved. The real story was how hard the 535 pushed the V8, the 535 is an awesome car . But the 545 is just a bit quicker

Edited to add that I did actually send an email to TopGear to see if they would comment on the questions raised on here about the end of the race and whether the gap between the cars was real or staged. Sadly they never replied.....

Agree very little difference between the 535d and the 545i. And yes it was a fair comapro since the diesel targets the v8 more than the 530i. I would comprare a remaped 535d with a 550i. But probably one would get similar results...or not

That's because they would have to admit they rigged it - I reckon it was MUCH closer than it looked.

(545i is still faster though)
