I think you're right; I believe the full efficient dynanmics came with the 177ps engine in Sept 2007
The general E60 LCI launch came in March 2007, but the 520d still had the pre-LCI 163ps engine and pre-LCI auto as an option
The 177ps 520d came in Sept 2007 and the LCI auto was introduced on the 520d at the same time
I think this is how they rolled it out, but can't remember for sure -- I must have killed those particular brain cells off at the bar the other night!

The new engine is called
M57D20TU
and it's a 2.0 l L4 turbo-diesel with
177 hv/4000 rpm and 350 Nm/1750–2500 rpm
