Can anyone who's driven both versions tell me the main differences with the performance i.e initial acceleration, mid-range and cruising ability?

ive driven the 218bhp 3.0d and the 3.0i, so cant compare but imo , the 184bhp version is without a turbo, so is VERY VERY SLOW... the automatic gets from 0-62 in 11.7seconds. Mid range is very weak, it redlines below 4000rpm because of the lack of turbo. But once you get it cruising it will be ok

218bhp vs 231bhp , no differnece in initial acceleration ... in mid-range the diesel is better. The 3.0i sounds better but gives a much poorer mileage
X5 3.0d features BMW performance and diesel economy.
The X5 3.0d combines the virtues of a sports activity vehicle with the superior economy of a powerful diesel.
The X5 3.0d develops a maximum output of 135 kW/184 bhp and maximum torque of 410 Nm/302 lb-ft from BMW?s DI straight-six.
Acceleration from 0?100 km/h is in 10.5 seconds. The top speed is 200 km/h.
Fuel economy is excellent, with the common rail engine consuming only 9.7 liters/100 km under the EU standard, equaling 29.1 mpg Imp.

check the engine designations
m57 d30 for the old one
and
m57 d30 TU for the new one
TU as in turbo
trust me

All BMW diesels have at least one turbo - otherwise 0-60 acceleration would about 25 seconds! I've driven the 184bhp version, and you could feel the turbo kicking in, just as you can with my 525d.

Following in the highly successful footsteps of the X5 4.4i and the X5 3.0i (now on sale in the UK), the new 3.0d is the third X5 model to be introduced. Powered by BMW's highly praised Direct Injection, common rail, straight six turbo-diesel, the BMW X5 3.0d develops 135 kW /184 bhp and 410 Nm/302 lb ft of torque. It shares this engine with the widely acclaimed 330d and 530d models.
Performance is brisk and fuel economy outstanding for a vehicle of this type. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes 10.5 seconds, top speed is 125 mph and fuel consumption on the combined cycle 29.1 mpg. The X5 3.0d is available with a five-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox, with the manual transmission to follow in mid 2002.
...
my bad , i would have never known it looking at the figures
