We are in the market for an SUV to replace my wife's aging 2004- X5: 4.4 with 88,000 miles which we purchased as a CPO in 2005
We went to see some vehicles yesterday and looked in to some X3 as well as X5 at local dealership ( new as well as CPO). Also heard that X3 is being replaced by another model in 2011? Is it a fact or the local dealership was just trying to force the sale ?
Also how does anyone compared the X vehicles to Range Rover/ Land rovers family of vehicles or with Audi Q series for cost and other comparisons... These things are costly..what gives you best bang for your bucks..?.
Was surprised that BMW is only putting run flats in the X and no spares - sounds scary. Is it common these days with all manufacturer? does this mean than one has to replace the whole tire for even a single nail flat..? Sounds really strange and expensive endeavor..?
We want to make the right decision . Any help in the process ill be highly appreciated. I m sure many of us must have gone through very similar decision making process.

However, with the new TT 5.0 X5's coming out, I would wait and order one of these. They are going to be MONSTERS! I believe stats are 400HP and 450lbs TQ. Add a Dinan Chip to that thing and you're pushing well over 500 on both fronts.

I custom ordered my wife a 2009 X5 4.8i Sport last year (Ordered in Dec '08 - Arrived Feb '09). We also test drove the RR Sport SC. I must say that I absolutely LOVE her X5. I like it much more than the RR too. I loaded her car up with all options, so it's far superior in terms of luxury than the RR we drove.

Hey C, I googled the TT X5 and it says its 4.4L. Is this the same engine as the 545's sans the turbos?

The new, second gen X3 is due to be shown publicly in the next month or so and will be at dealers by the end of this year or the beginning of next year. It is said to be larger in size (closer to the first gen X5), more sporty and much more luxurious than the first gen X3. See link here.

2006 BMW X3
I too keep reading the new X3 is due the end of 2010. The refreshed X5 is out in May 2010. It will have the 4.4TT V8 (same as the X6, 5GT, and 7). To answer the one question above, it is a completely new design from the 545i with reverse flow heads, and more.
I really liked the 2006 X3 I had but to replace the 550i in October, I am strongly going to consider the X5 5.0.

Regardless, it's still a sick engine and will make my X5 feel like a snail. Sucks!

But they can be anemic due to turbo lag. But a couple months ago, my dealer gave me a 335i loaner and I drove that thing at redline to 2nd or 3rd gear every time I get a chance.
It is so smooth, engine was rev-happy - I love how BMW implemented the twin-turbo on that engine. The X5 with 400 horses would be a sweet spot between performance and practicality (with 7-seat option, better fuel economy, etc vs the X5-M).
I just hope BMW design move towards a more aggressive form on their non-M models - or else, after a couple of years they will be too conservative when compared with the new Benz's and Audis.

Coming from Audis (A4 and TT) - the push coming from the turbo can be very addictive especially when chipped (I had Revo).
