Hmmmm .... Interesting note in Motor Trend (Dec 06 issue).

Before the new 7 series comes to the U.S. (late 2008 as a 2009 model), "BMW will try selling the current 7 here with the maker's 4.0 liter turbodiesel V-8." Anyone know the stats on this power plant?

Might BMW do the same in the E60?

Interesting how the picture indicates BMW is incorporating the bulging wheel arches from the new MB S-Class.

Does anyone know if BMW has any plans for hybrids? It seems they get better fuel economy with less greenhouse emissions vs. petrol, so I would consider one. Its odd that Lexus/Toyota and Honda are the only brands with a decent selection of these engines in the U.S.

Toyota/Lexus can keep the gas-electric hybrid. They don't really get much better real world mileage and I don't care to dump more batteries in landfills. By 2008 diesels sold in the US will need to have much lower emission. BMW will also have a hydrogen 7 series for sale in 2007 (limited numbers) and is also working on steam hybrid (not battery electric) engines.

Diesel technology has come a LONG way and should have been made available in the US with the same availability that Europe has. The fact is that these vehicles consume HALF the fuel a Benzine/Gasoline vehicle use and embracing this technology and it would be a positive thing for the overall consumption of fuel. Diesel also doesnt leave the driver with any underwhelming feeling behind the wheel - you can get awesome performance from these engines and still save on fuel costs!

Visiting Europe and seeing high consumption offenders such as the Grand Cherokee Ltd or the Range Rover in Diesel configurations that are several years old frustrates me....we still dont see them in the US.

rant over.

Trouble is that all current BMW and Mercedes (inc the new 07 Bluetec) diesels still fail the CARB emissions regulations in California (and the 2 or 3 other big markets that follow CAR and thus aren't 50 state legal. The combination of low sulfur diesel and some ongoing development on the emissions issues should see the diesels over in the US in the next year or two - and hopefully sooner.

Not only that, but according to many MB new 07 Bluetec diesel owners. finding the right fuel for their cars (ultra low emission sulphur) right now is a venture as they cannot run on the old low sulphur fuel. Let's hope things get better. A combination of electric/diesel to me sounds better than the dreamed hydrogen cars.

Unless you're getting your diesel from a marina, finding ULSD in the US shouldn't be a problem as of mid October 2006. Off road and marine diesel must be ULSD by next summer.
