My Ride: GONE BUT NOT FOGOTTEN : 530d SE Auto : Titanium Grey / Anthracite Leather, Poplar Trim, 18in 123 Style Alloys, Adaptive Bi-Xenons, Business Nav, Hi-Fi Speaker Package, Heated seats, Split-Fold Rear Seats
LR DISCO 3 HSE with everything (including 3 kids)
Took my car into the dealers this morning to have my latest list of isses fixed (6 items in total) and feeling pretty crappy after a stressfull end-of-quarter. So I was in need of a pick-me-up....
When I pulled into the car-park I parked nose-to-nose with a 2 yo M3 Coupe in Silver Grey, for sale at GBP 33K. It was really looking tempting as I have always hankered after an M3.
To Hell with the wife and kids I am thinking - who needs the space of an E60, we can still stuff them into a Coupe (kids are small ). In fact I drive the car alone for 95% of the time anyway....
Is this just plain stupidity ?

Drive an M3 and an M3 CSL (yes, CSL's can be got for ?32-?34k with 10-15k miles) and see whether you want a fast cruiser or an all out racer - the difference really is that much & they both have same bootspace / 4 seats.
My experience of E46's is that they have exactly the same number of issues as E60/61's. Examples are door handle mechanisms breaking, rattling seatbelt mounts. You wont get away from the niggles by buying an E46.
M3 prices are continuing to fall. A 3yr old model can be got for mid ?20k's and they are expensive to run (I averaged about 23mpg vs M5 21mpg & CSL gets 24mpg when it's driven sensibly).
Early E46 M3's are starting to fall into Chav hands - the image will start to take a battering.
Really, I wouldn't do it - if you want to say ***k it, I'm getting a fun car for myself, I'd either get a CSL or, more sensibly, keep the 530d and buy something for the weekend that may well cost you less to buy than the depreciation felt on an M3 in a year.
(BTW, I have more fun in the E30 320 that cost <?4k to build than I do in the CSL !)

Julian, Thanks for the insight. I am going to get a testdrive - I have discussed with with the sales guy a while ago (with thoughs of buying an E92 M3) but never got around to it.
Intersting point though ....
Now that is an angle that I haven't considered
