Question about E46 rear lights

My Ride: 2006 525XI, Jet black on Dakota beige. Premium and winter packages. I consider myself a purist and intend to keep my car absolutely stock and shiny.
2008 328I Convertible, Sapphire black on beige interior. Premium package, NAV, iPod adapter.
Retired: 2002 325I, Titanium silver on black leather. Premium package. Absolutely stock and proud of it.
I know that I should ask on an E46 forum, but I have never participated in one to the extent that I do here and I would feel weird asking.
Anyway, I recently noticed that both of my rear light bulbs on the left side are dimmer than those on the right side. The brake lights above them are just fine. I would doubt that both light bulbs are going bad (what are the odds?) and I was wondering if there's a relay or some other component that could be causing this. Does anybody here know what I should be looking for in order to make the light bulbs as bright as those on the other side?
