Just finished reading the article in the NOV 07 ed of Bimmer.

Sorry M3 lovers, I gotta agree with the author.....part of what made the M3 so special was what it did with the I-6. Upgrading to a V-8 just doesn't have the appeal. Now it kind of matches up with a new Pontiac GTO, which with a few mods could smoke the M3 and still cost thousands less. IMO thats a definite downgrade.

There is a lot cars that you could add mods to and end up with a faster straight-line speed. The M3 powerplant has the same philosophy as their I-6, just with two extra cylinders. They use a smaller displacement (4.0 liters) high-revving V8. The M3 is the lightest of its competitors and reacts best on the track. The M3 is not made for drag races. It is the most sporting and emotionally appealing car in this group. Not to mention the Pontiac GTO is a piece of crap.

Car & Driver tested both cars:

6.0 GTO 0-60 in 4.8 sec

New M3 0-60 in 4.3 sec

A huge difference in performance, plus the GTO handles like crap and build quality sucks a fat one.

I test drove the new M3 today and was impressed. So much so that I'm thinking of ordering the DCT version which my dealer thinks I can get it by July 08. I did a short review of it here:
M3 review & exhaust vid

also has a vid of the exhaust sound

My SMG had 1 software upgrade by the dealer which was seamless. It was flawless from day 1. I wouldn't be afraid of their new auto. Its all about the price. I'm enjoying the room and perf of the 550i also. That'll be hard to give up. Is there no more sunroof?

no sunroof if you get the carbon fibre roof..

In reply to Pinguhk, for the price of a used E46 M3, I'd probably go for a new EVO X ... which has been on my mind too..

sunroof in a sport car no way to much wight, CF much better.

Evo X good 1 but in HK I have only seen 1 and not many pple are getting the EVOs now.
have you seen the new evo XI? In HK it cost over $57700us way too much for a jap car, much better off with a euro car.
At lest the police will not stop you but they will stop a EVO
