I got shot of my wife's 116 sport and wouldnt reccommend the 1.6 petrol - far to underpowered and needs a sixth gear.
The diesels seem to be a much better bet.

NB my wifes 2 year 116 sport with 18k miles and 17" alloys was sold for 11.2k to the dealer - they had it up at 14k in a matter of 24 hours - so look at a higher priced one's and see if you can get them to discount.

The price difference between "trade in " and subsequent forecourt price is astonishing. I'm hoping someone here has a 118 D to sell!

If you get onto the BCA car auction site, you will find BMW approved auction dates with stocklist. I purchased my 04 530dse at least ?4k below retail price. Looking at your price range, I certainly saw quite a few 118d sports in that bracket. I made notes of how much the ones prior to mine went for and can give you that if you let me know.
