So my car is in the shop for it's first check-up. I'm finally getting the iDrive update, which I'm looking forward to.

But the real reason for this post is that they put me in a 335i as a loaner and all I can say is, WOW! This car has some juice! I took my wife around the block and even she was impressed. However, I must say that I still would take a V8 over this engine. I've driven a friends 550 and I must say that the whole feel of the car is much different. I think it suits the 335 well, but I'm not sure about it in the E60 with the additional weight and all...

Regardless though, the 335i is a great car. BMW really did a great job with this engine! They said they might not have my car back today, which is actually fine with me. I could go the weekend, driving this little beast around.

Yes man, a fine piece of engineering.

FYI:

E90 335i auto - 1635kg
E60 535i auto - 1680kg

E90 335xi auto - 1735kg
E60 535xi auto - 1790kg

The weight differences are only 45kg and 55kg, respectively!

The 550i auto weights 1800kg, 120kg more than the 535i auto, but has only 60 more HP and 60 more lb-ft. That's why the 535i is stealing sales from the 550i these days.

535 is a great car, but the primary reason for it stealing sales from the 550 is because it's cheaper. 550 is (in my view) still the better value, particularly on sport models. The difference in weight between the two models is around 7% whereas the 550 has around 20% more torque and 20% more bhp - that's a noticeable difference, whereas 7% on weight really isn't (plus the 550 has roughly the same weight balance as the 535). Another factor to keep in mind is that the 550 never puts out less than the 535's maximum torque even at low RPM.

Thank-you Blah, for bring up the weight issue. Most people just assume that the E90 is substantially lighter than the E60. With the E60 being a more expensive car I think that BMW has the ability to use more high tech materials (read lighter) in the make-up of the car. My father has a E92 335 and I am hoping that I will have similar performance from my E60 535 when it arrives.
