I have driven an old E36 4 door M3 with Automatic so I know they made them. They are not that common, but it was indeed an option.

I remeber when they came out me and my buddy went to BMW dealer ship and saw bunch of them in 4 doors and automatic so its a real thing. They had those in Sport edition and Luxury edition, had different wheels and seats. 5 spoke 17th were on Luxury and other M 17 with many tinty spokes were for Sport edition. That was my dream car untill I saw E46 :help: |
