Thumbs down

The facelift of the 3-series coupe and cabrio will appear within the next few months. Dr Reithofer also said that there will be two completely new engines ... and of course didn't say more than that.

Finally it's now confirmed that four-cylinder turbo engines are coming. Their premiere will be witrh the new 3-series due in 2011.

Hybrid concept is only for 5-series and upwards. Dr Reithofer said that is simply too costy on smaller models and will instead continue to develop the existing EfficientDynamics concept.

The development of the V8 and V12 gasoline engines will continue, thanks to market demand in eg U.S. and China. Also V12 engines have a future thanks to a "streamlined development" with Rolls Royce.

Oh if only. My money is on a tweaked version of the TTV8 in the X5M and X6M. My guess is that in F10 M5 form, the egine will produce 600 bhp. Or so I hope.

This is an unfortunate but inevitable consequence of the pressures being exerted by governments to force car manufacturers to increase the average MPG of their fleet. We went through one of these kicks in the early-mid 1970s and it gutted the performance of cars for many years.

What's wrong with 4-cylinder engines? I think they are great. BMW is famous for their 4-cylinders, maybe not as famous as for their I6, but still. I'd love to see them make a comeback, especially in new Z2 roadster.
