My pick would definitely be the 335i. I'm yet to test drive it, though.

Since you are in Germany and not in the US, it also depends on how much you'll drive it.

Diesel is cheaper, so if you drive a lot, the Diesel might be the better choice, financially.

But my vote goes to the petrol engine. I like them much better.
Just had to drive a 530d loaner while the car was in service. I was so happy to get my petrol back. The Diesel feeling and sound makes me sick, allthough BMW's are way better than others.

I have a 535d, but I voted 335i. Not test driven either, but if you are going for a "fun" car, then have fun!
  • Better weight distribution
  • Better acceleration
  • Better sound
And if the official consumption figures are representative of the relative "real" consumption, you won't pay too high a price in fuel either.

It's not just the fuel prices...

You have to pay waaaaay more tax for the Diesel in Germany, and if it doesn't have the "Partikelfilter" you pay even more. And that filter is another option you have to order...

335i - it's a beast, and doubtless sharper than the 335d.

There are times I feel that the torque of my B5, or a x35d for that matter, corrupts handling balance. In a big old bus like an E61, that's less of an issue, but in a chuckable little coupe, I'd rather have the power and linearity of the 335i. Better yet if it were NA, of course, with a six speed manual box.

Oh hang on, I've just talked myself into buying another B8... darn...

Its all down to personal preference with the Diesel vs Petrol. I personally prefer the Diesel as all that low down torque makes driving a lot easier. I find that petrols need to be revved more to get the same accelaration...

I had a loaner 525i and, although it was a nice drive and really shifted when needed, i still prefered the lazy drive of my diesel.

On the other hand, if you want a car for fun and not a lot else, then the petrol will be the better choice as you tend to drive them harder!!!

I'd sumarise that for an everyday car a diesel is the more sensible (but still fun) car, or for weekends only, then the petrol is the better choice.

I find two things hard to believe:

1) That you could buy the 535d for the same price as the 530i. In UK, Italy and Spain there's at least ?5000 of difference (though some of it disappears if you even out specs)

2) That a dealer let you have a test drive for one week. I'm lucky if I get 20 minutes. What's your trick?

...??? tough one... but I believe it woulb be the "i". Why? Because I have the "d" at the carage! The "i" would serve as weekend fun and at the Ring and other places of free speed. Improved everyway of course!
