In a 2005 X5 with out nav screen, how to pair BT?

Hi all,
Well I posted in another forum about getting a Nokia 6230 to pair with my car but it didnt even find it, then some one said maybe I need to put the car in pairing mode, I called BMW support and the woman on the phone said I would need the shop to use a special tool to do this lol, is this fact or fiction here? I tried two other BT phones and they found the car on their own, the car didnt find them, when I explained that to the woman on the phone she had said that was luck and thats not the normal, she went on to say the X5 pairs different that any other models.
So if thats the case does any one know how to put the car into Bluetooth pairing mode or do I actually need to goto the dealer to do this?
