Weclome fellow Canadian!
Go with the 530 for sure. You don't need X Drive. Just get snow tires for the winter. With DSC and DTC you really wont need the "X".
I drove without winter tires last winter and I was impressed with the performance, but I would recommend winter tires.

I was hoping I could get by without the X. I'll be asking for everything but I think I'll prefer Performance, Nav, Premium stereo first.

The E60 is a pretty heavy car and I would think that you'd want at least the power that the 530 has to move it with authority.

Welcome fellow Canadian. Living in the Toronto area, I have not seen an absolute requirement for 4wd. I would leave the xi option open but not have it a mandatory requirement. Happy shopping! I would opt for the 530 over 525 though.

My vote is for the xi. IMO, it performs 100% better then snow tires alone. I know this because I originally bought an 04 530i. I had snow tires. It plain sucked. Traded it in after 6 months for an xi. There really is no comparison. The extra control and safety in AWD is unmatched in snow tires alone. You will receive different opinions on this here, so do your research. They make the xi for a reason. Good luck in your decision!
