Hello all;

Excellent board. I'm looking at getting my first bmw in about 6 months and I'm starting the investigation stage now so I'll be lurking and asking questions here and there until then.

I'm late 40's family man commute to work so I'm looking for comfort and quality as opposed to race car performance. I'm leaning towards 2005/06 530i but I need to decide if a 525i will do, or also if I need the xi model. I'm in southern ontario Canada so we can get 3 - 5 months of heavy snow. I'm used to fwd cars with snows on all corners and I suspect a rwd bmw will require that also.

Get the 530. The E60 is a pretty heavy car and I would think that you'd want at least the power that the 530 has to move it with authority. Obviously, you're aware of the immensely more powerful (but more expensive) variants of the E60. Personally, in terms of bang for your buck amoung E60s, the 535 is king.

Any E60 will be a comfortable, but responsive, commuter (including the 525). I just go nuts if I am on a highway on ramp and don't have enough power to rapidly accelerate to merging speed -- hence the V8. But the TTV^ in the 535 is just about as fast.

If you have tons of snow, go with the XI 535 D if they have that

Hey Nick, welcome aboard. One thing to keep in mind is the engine differences that exist between 04/05 and 06/07 525s & 530s. For example, at least in the US, an 06/07 525 makes almost as much hp as an 04/05 530 (215,225, respectively).

Weclome fellow Canadian!

Go with the 530 for sure. You don't need X Drive. Just get snow tires for the winter. With DSC and DTC you really wont need the "X".

I drove without winter tires last winter and I was impressed with the performance, but I would recommend winter tires.
