xi's are harder to find than the RWDs, but will be a good choice since it rains/snows quite a bit in CT. I go out there twice a year for business trips - Shelton, CT. I've also lived in the midwest for awhile and understand the weather although i'm in CA now. AWD's are awesome in general.
530xi - you should be able to find good deals as it was discontinued in 2007. I could be wrong but 335xi and 530xi price should be pretty similar - but, it depends on the options.
I think 5 series would be a great option. Plus, your son already has a 3 series that you could trade cars from time to time. Just my 2 cents. Good luck! You will like this forum.

2004-2007 models: 525i/530i (xi for AWD) - produced up until Feb/March 2007 if i'm not mistaken
2008-2010 models: 528i/535i (xi for AWD)

It's mostly the engine difference. 530(255hp) vs. 535(300hp - turbo charged). Body style is the same except the tail lights/reflectors, minor interior changes and others.
