All,
I am not a new BMW owner. Up until about 2 weeks ago I was the proud owner of an E36 - 325i (1992). A nice lady ran a red light and totaled my car. I was fine - but my baby was a little bent.
So - I went on the hunt to find one in the US - given all the hype about how much less expensive they are down there - I figured - what the heck.
I found one that I liked (530i 2004 with 500 miles before the factory warranty expires) at about the right price in Illinois. Did all the research and added up all the costs. After all was said and done I expected that I could have brought the thing up here and save between $8 and $10K of the average selling price in Canada for the car.
Now I've bought the car, set up the transport and the only thing I am missing is the Letter of Admissibility from BMW. I call. And while talking to the service guy he casually mentions that I need to replace the Instrument Cluster and the IHKA unit. This little bit of work is slated to cost me $4200.00!! Funny that is NOT what BMW Canada told me initially.
Not sure why I need the instrument cluster - the one I'm getting has KM's on it?
It's hard to describe how angry one can get knowing that in Canada we have been ripped off so bad for prices of goods like this for so long - and when you find a way to maybe save a few bucks on a car - the dealerships hose you for compliance.
I guess the morale of the story is (at least for me) double and triple check with you local dealerships on what you need to do to be compliant before making the purchase.
Although I love the ride of the BMW - I can tell you I'm already disappointed and it will be a couple weeks before I even see my car.
Sigh...
