thanks, but got lots to learn! i actually shot these with a flash and did some post production work on them a bit.

are you a photog? maybe you can come out one Wed and show me how to shoot at night!

I'm strictly a hobbyist and on a learning curve just like you Night photography is always challenging, especially if you don't have ISO24,000 as an option. Even then, you're dealing with a grainy shot. My $0.02 for your XSi with ISO1600 (usable 800) would be to invest in a remote release and a good tripod. You can get some very nice creative shots with that setup, with long exposures and lighting.

i'm using the built in flash, no diffuser.

i need to invest in a tripod and a remote release. any suggestions

For the remote, just get a Canon. I don't have the PN, but you can search online. As for tripods, I'd suggest you look at this FAQ:
