What flash are you using? Any diffuser on it?
I'm strictly a hobbyist and on a learning curve just like you
Night photography is always challenging, especially if you don't have ISO24,000 as an option. Even then, you're dealing with a grainy shot. My $0.02 for your XSi with ISO1600 (usable 800) would be to invest in a remote release and a good tripod. You can get some very nice creative shots with that setup, with long exposures and lighting.
