IMHO and experience, SoCal ain't the place for good merlots and cabs. Napa, Sonoma and Paso Robles make the best cabs. (My wine fridge is stocked mainly with California cabs.) That said, a wine tour through the Santa Inez Valley (remember the movie "Sideways"?) is always fun, and not too far off the 101 Freeway, near Solvang. Expect to taste pinots, cab francs (not sauvignons), and dessert wines.

Be sure to have a designated E60 driver (or take a limo tour), though...
Lee's right on - Central coast makes some of the worlds best Pinot Noir and a very small percentage of the wineries there, make cabs or merlot worth drinking and for the most part...if they do have a cab, you don't want to drink it - you'll want to use it to clean the driveway under your neighbors oil leaking MB.

I'm working on going for the day...but already have plans on Sun 3/9. Sounds like too much fun.

Well, one of the things we'll be doing is wine tasting. The winery might not ask for your ID but you also don't have to drink. That's why I'm trying to find a winery with bocce ball so everyone will have some thing to do.

It sounds like fun, and I want to go, but I have a new girlfriend, and we're going through that "hangin' out together every weekend" phase. If some other guys are bringing along significant others, then I'll go. I'd just hate to have her totally bored with my comments like, "Hey, honey! Check out that guy's diffuser!" (Or hearing you guys constantly asking me, "What the hell is a '555'?!")

Lets not forget the whites!!

Wines I mean, some very nice chardonnays and sauvignon blancs are made in south SLO county. Syrah and zinfandel are available but vary greatly from one winery to another.

Lee, I think there will be plenty for your GF to do. All the wineries have gift shops, if she has any special interests let me know and I'll map them for you. (i'm one of the local guys). The scenery, the beach, and hopefully good weather should help make it a good weekend for everyone.
