This last Saturday 11/4/06, we were back together again. The usual suspects vegastrashed (545i SMG), hollywoodtrash (550i SMG), brian1225 (550i Step), heezy545i (SLK 350????) were joined by three new peeps: two 3-series: e90 325i and 330i, one Audi s4. Unfortunately, Tblax545i and EBMCS03 were not able to make it. No worries, we always get together for more runs.

The biggest disappoint of all was that no 335i showed up. Two had responded to my invite but no showed. The 330i and 325i owners had fun and have told their fellow e90/e92 peeps that they missed out on some good times. Hopefully, the next Socal run we can muster up some 335s.

To the results. The timed runs, hollywoodtrashed got the best time: 5.5 (0 - 60). Not sure what his 1/4 was. Brian1225 has the next best at 5.7 (0 - 60). I forgot what his 1/4 mile time was as well. The 330i's 6.8 (0 - 60) was better than the 4.2 v8 S4. The 15.1 (1/4 mile) time of the 330i was identical to the s4. Heezy545i didn't bring his 545i but his new toy the SLK 350. Don't remember if he did any timed runs. The 325i's time I don't remember either. And, last of all I didn't do any timed runs. I had some slight problems that need to be corrected at the next service.

After receiving the results of the timed runs, brian1225 was not a happy camper that hollywoodtrash got the best (0 - 60) time. They lined up and ran head-to-head. It looked like brian1225 got the jump on the line and kept it and won. Basically, brian1225 beat the tar out of everyone again.

Brian1225 was looking forward to seeing how the 335i would've matched up against him. I think that at the next launch, there needs to be a 335 or EBMCS03's IS350 present. He's getting bored beating everyone.

On a side note, hollywoodtrash and I have some problems with our SMG tranny. I ran brian1225 and could not shift out of first gear. The same exact thing happened to hollywoodtrash when he went up against heezy545i's SLK 350. The SMG tranny is not a good tranny for launching from a dig. Yes, I know I've mentioned this before in the past. My mistake was not telling hollywood to wait at least 10 minutes between launches. Both of us will require that we take our cars in to get the Launch Mode (Acceleration Assist) reset (mine for the second time).

Hey vegastrashed, I must have missed any earlier posts by you with regard to resetting launch control on your car. Can you re-explain it or point out the thread where you talked about it?

Did the car prevent you from launching after a certain amount of times until reset?

Of course. Here's the deal with SMG. You cannot do consecutive launches without giving the clutch time to cool off inbetween launches. I found this out the hard way. There is no literature anywhere that mentions this. It does not matter whether you use Launch Control aka Launch Mode aka Acceleration Assist or not. The first time I used AA twice back-to-back which was fine. The third time, I bounced off the rev limiter in first gear. The car didn't shift for me. I knew then I had a problem. I took the car in for servicing for other problems and told them I needed to get the AA fixed.

A month after getting my car back from the dealer I came back from going out in Hollywood Saturday night/Sunday morning around 3am. I picked a spot that had no traffic and attempted a launch in the cold morning weather hoping that would help with my runs. I did three runs. The first was with AA which I got 5.7. My second run was 5.8 with manual shifting. My third was the worst, I think it was 6.2 and that was manual as well.

I went home to San Diego later in the day. Near my home I found a secluded spot and attempted another launch using AA. To my surprise I bounced off the rev limiter again. Apparently, the car deactivated the AA feature 15 hours earlier while I was doing my three runs in LA.

So, I came to the conclusion that the car will deactivate AA whether I use AA back-to-back-to-back or not. It's protecting the clutch from overheating and any further slipping. Related to this is if the car is launched frequently in a minimal amount of rest time it will not shift into second from first. The refusal of the car to shift happened to hollywoodtrash and I this past Saturday and we both bounced off the rev limiter in first. The only way to reset the AA is to take it in and admit to the SA that I had too much fun.

Gotcha. Thanks.

When the car is in it's "bounce off the rev limiter" mode, does it still start out by dumping the clutch at around 4000 rpm?

No dumping at all. The needle goes from 0 - 7000 rpm and back down without shifting the gear. That is what I call bouncing off the rev limiter. Is that correct?

Works for me -- I wasn't sure if the thing was launching off the line but then not upshifting to the higher gears, thus bumping into the rev limiter in a different way...

Hey, you can still do launches albeit manually or in auto. Why don't you since you HAVE my G-Meter?
