The July 25th meet was a total blast. We had 14 cars. The following members attended:

1. Sdg1871 (Scott plus Victor) -- 550
2. V_therussian (Vlad plus my "bitter" half ) -- 530
3. brabusw209amg (John) -- 545
4. V_therussuan's buddy Phil in a 328
5. RC1818 (Rich the maniac) -- 535
6. king1828 (Joe) -- M5
7. Amanuel777 (Amanuel) -- 525
8. BMWM5NYC (Richard) -- M5 (from the car crazy streets of Manhattan)
9. Ghostteck(Anthony) (the man who drives his I6 like a V8)
10. Dalamrtinez (Dalbert) -- 525 xi
11. Zifnab (Rickie) -- 545
12. Unknown (name classified) -- 550
13. Extassy (Joe) -- GT-R
14. VW2545 (Sean) 545 (initial meet up but could not go on meet due to serious mountain bike accident the evening before -- props to showing up at all)

The meeting had more than a few memorable (for better or worse) moments.

First, member VW2545 (Sean) came to the initial meet up at Rockaway even though he suffered a nasty spill on his mountain bike the evening before and was having back pain. That's dedication and we missed him on the run. Feel better soon bro!

Second, member V_therussian (Vlad), showed up with a huge slit on one of his front tires (a runflat). If it had been me, I would have put on a donut and gone home. But Vlad went on the meet anyway and his tire only failed near the end of the meet. He still got to enjoy about 90% of the meet. Props to Vlad.

Third, member king1828 (Joe) got a ticket in Greenwood Lake, NY right at the spot where we did the turnaround on Route 17A at the April 25th Bear Mountain Meet. The ticket was total BS. Joe was last in the line of cars and a cop lying in wait in a parking lot pinched him for failing to following a traffic device (i.e., rolling a stop sign). The ticket was unjust. The cop saw a line of BMWs, decided that we were easy meat for his end of the month ticket quota and f*cked the last BMW in line which, by chance, happened to be Joe.

Fourth, we almost had a wipe out on Snow Hill Road. Phil took a 10 mph corner (there are more than a few of those on that road) at too high at speed and two of his wheels left the road, but he saved it and came out unscathed.

Fifth, the huge strain on our engines from the hard running in the Poconos caused an engine malfunction warning in Rich's 535 (those tempermental two turbos ). Thankfully, the warning went away after Rich turned his car on and off at the Dimmick Inn.

Sixth, by popular demand, member Extassy (Joe) brought his Nissan GT-R rather than his hugely modded M5. It was a thrill to see the GT-R in action. It was behind me in the twisties on Pa. State Route 590 and it is a monster. I was taking my car up to its absolute cornerning limits and the GT-R looked like it was merely driving down a straight road. That car is so fast and has no body roll at all. The grip it has is amazing. I wish that BMW would make a straight out 2 door supercar but every time the car designers come up with one, the business execs kill it. We need a successor to the mighty M1.

In terms of the route, the drive began at about 10am and ended at about 6pm in Harriman State Park at the top of the twisties on County Route 106. A little less than half of the group left after lunch at the Dimmick Inn and we ended up with four cars at the end point (sdg1871, Amanuel777, brabusw209amg and BMWM5NYC).

I want to thank everyone who showed up. It was a ton of fun but it required a big time commitment for those who came on this huge drive.

As many of you know, I am into driving meets. I will be organizing a "double black diamond" meet in the next few months to tackle Pennsylvania State Route 125 -- 30 miles up and 30 miles back of the most feared, wild, highly-rated twisty road within three hours drive of New York City. This one will be for serious drivers only as the 60 miles of twisties are very difficult and dangerous and it is a 2 1/2 hour drive from NYC to get to them. But they are in the middle of nowhere with little traffic and they go up and down a number of steep mountains. Victor and I have already done the road once and it was the best I've ever experienced in our part of the country. The run was so demanding on my engine that my oil level (in a new car) fell to the mininum level and I had to add a quart of oil. This is the kind of road that if you are not 100 percent confident in handling your car at its handling limit, you should not drive on it.
Scott, thanks again for organizing the run... My friend, Brian, and I were commenting on how well you know your car and know how to drive it to its limit, we were really impressed with your driving skill.
The GT-R was definitely made for this type of twisties... I have not push it to the limit yet, but someday I'd like to do that on the track. The highest cornering G I pulled that day was around 0.8G (according to the in-car data log). I hope that I can join you on the next meet

- Rice Boy

p.s. thanks for the pics guys

Thanks. I really liked watching the GT-R in action when the road turned wild. It looked so damn composed -- like a walk in the park.

Given the significant difference in the handling capabilities of a 550i Sport and a GT-R, even if I was flogging my ride to its absolute limit (which I was), it had to have seemed easy and slow to the GT-R when you were behind me on the twisties on Route 590 in Lackawaxen, Pa.

Let's definitely get together to explore some of the Pennsylvania twisties. They might serve as a basis for a future meet (and I am always in search for the next great twisty road). PM me and let me know when your schedule is good. Victor and I are free most weekends.

Best,

Scott

The quad exhaust.

Yes there is a thread on an August 8 Black Forest meet leaving from the Rockway Mall, BBQ in the Poconos and a twisties run there. I am not involved with organizing that meet but I may attend.
