All the evidence so far, from every magazine test on the 545 to the times recorded on here with g-meters etc seems to indicate that the step in general will be quicker than the manual. Znod and Grogan in their steptronic 545s have recorded better times than the only 550 manual test published to date and I suspect that applying the weight of evidence thus far a 550 step will beat a 550 manual and I would doubt that it makes much difference whether that's from a stop or a roll.

I think the Step only has the advantage from a stop. The gearing is what gives the step its advantage but on a roll the manual I think wil have the advantage over the step given the same engine.

To settle which tranny is best Step or 6-speed, we need to have someone with a 6-speed 550 at our next spirited driving get together. Anyone is Socal with a 550 6-speed?

EBMCS03 and I are trying to round up some 335s for the next Launch Meet sometime in October. You can be sure that we will post the results.

So when is this going to happen? After hearing and reading so much about the 335s, I'm really looking forward to running one.

Also, I'm due for a service soon, so hopefully these runs can take place before that so I can find out if the SW updates make any difference.

Heezy,
Nothing has happened. The thread about a joint e90/e92/e60 Meet is collecting dust over on e90post.com. We may need to wait until November before we can get the 335s to join us. More people will have their 335s by then and will want to know how they stack up againt other bimmers.

That's why the guys with the manuals and SMGs need to get a shorter final drive diff. If the 2 cars had the same gearing then the manual would win because there is more drive train loss with the Step.
3.45 gears sound very good right about now

Yeah... We're aware of that. Dinan has the differential available. AlexFW, hollywoodtrash, choi000 and I have looked into it in the past. Only Alex has followed through. I'm on hold for mods at the moment and not sure what hollywoodtrash and choi000 will did.
